The 24-hour rule

As a rule of thumb, children should only be sent to school once they do not exhibit any symptoms for 24 hours. The same rule will apply for all illnesses mentioned below.

When do we keep our children home

Keeping the rule above in mind, children should be kept home until they are symptom free for 24-hours in all of the following cases:

  1. They have a fever of 100.4 or higher.
  2. They are vomiting due to an illness or as a side-effect of an illness.
  3. They have a severe cold accompanied by a runny nose, cough, or any other symptoms. If it is a mild cold, then the child may be sent to school.
  4. If the child develops any rashes, sores, or bumps.
